Celebrate a Brazilian summer fest with us

June 15 | 2 - 8 pm | 236 Finch Ave East

Reach North York is a growing, multicultural church in North York, Toronto. One of our goals is to help people who feel disconnected become part of a community, and to do so we want to meet people where they are, and because of that, we want to invite everyone to our second Brazilian Summer Fest: Festa Junina, on Saturday, June 15th, from 2 to 8 pm!

Festa Junina, a traditional Brazilian festival, is a vibrant and joyful celebration that takes place in the winter months in Brazil. However, as we bring this beloved festivity to Canadian soil during the summer, we adapt it to embrace the warm weather while still keeping the essence of this cultural event alive. Join us as we explore the spirit and customs of Festa Junina and the exciting modifications we've made for our Canadian adaptation.

  • Origin and Significance:

Festa Junina originated as a celebration of St. John the Baptist, the Christian saint associated with fertility and harvest. In Brazil, it evolved into a joyful festival that honours rural traditions and the bountiful harvests of the winter season. In our Canadian adaptation, we'll embrace the summer spirit and commemorate the vibrant colours and flavours of the season.

  • Decorations:

Traditional Festa Junina decorations include colourful flags, lanterns, straw ornaments and a bonfire. For our Canadian adaptation, we can incorporate elements like maple leaf motifs and vibrant flowers to capture the essence of summer and Canadian culture. Imagine a lively blend of Brazilian and Canadian decorations adorning the event venue.

  • Clothing:

During Festa Junina in Brazil, people dress in traditional rural attire, such as checkered shirts, straw hats, and pigtails for women. For our Canadian everyone is encouraged to wear any checkered shirts.

  • Food and Drinks:

Traditional Brazilian Festa Junina treats include corn-based dishes, such as pamonha (sweet corn pudding) and canjica (sweet corn porridge). To adapt to the Canadian summer, we can offer a variety of delicious burger options, corn on the cob, and a traditional Brazilian lime beverage (caipirinha) to keep everyone refreshed and satisfied.

  • Activities and Entertainment:

Festa Junina is known for its lively music, dances, and games. In our Canadian adaptation, we will have a mix of Brazilian music genres, offering the traditional Festa Junina music alongside forró and sertanejo tunes. Additionally, we will introduce activities like summer-themed games and outdoor dance.

As we bring Festa Junina to Canada, we celebrate the spirit of unity, joy, and cultural exchange. By adapting this cherished Brazilian festival to the warm Canadian summer, we create a unique experience that bridges traditions and delights attendees from both cultures.

Get ready to immerse yourself in a vibrant fusion of Brazilian and Canadian festivities, where laughter, music, and delicious food come together to create lasting memories.
